Putting a new roof on a UK house is a fairly big job—it’s not just swapping tiles, it’s often a full structural and weatherproofing upgrade. Here’s what’s typically involved, step by step:
1. Initial inspection & planning
Our roofer will assess:
Condition of existing tiles/slates
Roof structure (rafters, battens, felt)
Ventilation and insulation
Chimneys, flashing, gutters
They’ll decide whether it’s a re-roof (full replacement) or just repairs.
2. Scaffolding & access
Scaffolding is almost always required for safety
Usually up for 1–2 weeks depending on size
May include skips for waste removal
3. Stripping the old roof
Existing tiles/slates are removed
Old battens and underfelt are stripped back
Waste is disposed of (sometimes tiles are reused if in good condition)
4. Structural checks & repairs
This is where surprises can crop up:
Damaged rafters repaired or replaced
Roofline products (fascias, soffits, guttering) often replaced at this stage
Chimney repointing or repairs if needed
5. Installing new roof layers
Modern UK roofs are built in layers:
Breathable membrane (felt) for waterproofing
Timber battens fixed across rafters
6. Laying new tiles or slates
Choice of material:
Concrete tiles (most common, cost-effective)
Clay tiles (more premium look)
Natural slate (long-lasting, more expensive)
Tiles are fixed, aligned, and secured to withstand UK weather.
7. Leadwork & finishing details
Lead flashing installed around chimneys, valleys, and joints
Ridge tiles fitted
Ventilation systems added if needed
8. Guttering & roofline finishing
New gutters and downpipes fitted if part of the job
Fascias and soffits completed
9. Final checks & clean-up

UPVC Roofline Products & Services
We Install all Roofline Products
Roofline products are the external components fitted along the edge of a roof—such as fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and guttering—that protect the roof structure and support effective drainage. They benefit a property by preventing water damage, improving ventilation, reducing maintenance (especially with modern uPVC systems), and enhancing the overall appearance and value of the home.
